SUMMARY:Webinar Series: NOVA Community College and Students with Disabilities Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Part 2 – Navigating Campus Life at NVCC\nTuesday\, April 19th – 5:00 p.m. \n  \nAs inclusion expands and greater opportunities become normalized\, more people with developmental disabilities (DD) are going to college. That is certainly the case across the campuses of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). But like with most first-year college students\, academic skills may not translate easliy to social and life skills. People with DD tend to struggle with that piece of the college experiencce; some students fail out of school or really struggle to adapt to the new environment and demands of college life. So for inclusion to really matter\, we need to help perspective and current NVCC students learn about options\, support\, planning tips\, etc. to help them be successful. \n  \nThe Office of Accommodations and Accessibility Services at NVCC and College Steps\, a campus organization offering personalized college support\, peer mentoring and tutoring services\, are pleased to partner with The Arc of Northern Virginia on a two-part webinar series. The two part series is a way for prospective and current NVCC students with disabilities\, and their supporters\, to learn more about how to successfully apply for and navigate all that the NVCC network has to offer. \n  \nThe second webinar of the series is aimed at enrolled and current students. This session will review how and when to identify as a person with a disability\, options for parent involvement\, locating and utilizing support services\, examples of accommodations\, tips for navigating college life and deadlines\, and employment and internships (like the Workforce Recruitment Program). This session will also feature a representative from College Steps who can discuss how their services can assist students with disabilities in navigating academic and social life. \n  \nNOTE: These sessions will NOT be recorded\, so you must attend live to hear them presented. \n  \nNote: Due to ongoing health and safety concerns regarding COVID-19\, this is workshop will be held as a Zoom online webinar. \n  \nRemember\, all of our webinar events are FREE to attend\, but pre-registration is required.
