This book is for anyone who has ever felt the need for a wiggle\, stomp\, or squeeze! \nAbout the Presenter: Lindsey Rowe Parker is a mom at the tail end of toddlerhood\, embracing the next phase of parenting while learning to navigate and advocate for her autistic daughter. With a recent adult diagnosis of ADHD\, and a new deeper understanding of her own sensory experiences\, she has begun to delve into the neurodiversity community learning all she can from neurodivergent voices. DESCRIPTION:More information on the presentation coming soon! \nMorénike Giwa Onaiwu\, PhD(c)\, MA is an educator\, writer\, public speaker\, parent\, and global advocate whose work focuses on meaningful community involvement and leadership\, disability\, racial\, and gender equity\, dismantling stigma\, and inclusion and empowerment. Often drawing\nfrom personal background as a person of color in a neurodiverse and serodifferent family\, a late-diagnosed adult on the autism spectrum\, and relevant educational and professional experience\, Morénike is a highly sought after presenter\, consultant\, and subject matter expert. \nMorénike has been an invited speaker in the White House\, at the United Nations Headquarters\, a keynote speaker and/or presenter at numerous conferences\, and provides diversity\, research\, and disability consulting to several organizations. Morénike\, who is currently a Humanities Scholar at Rice University and a doctoral candidate in education\, has been published by Beacon Press and Palgrave MacMillan and will release an edited collection on neurodiversity in the Black community in 2022 with Jessica Kingsley Publishing.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop\, called The Big Transition: Caregiver Workshop\, will provide parents/caregivers with support and strategies to prepare their family for the return to in-person instruction. This 60 minute workshop will be offered twice\, once in English and once in Spanish. The English workshop will be presented on August 18. the Spanish workshop will be presented on August 19 \nThe pandemic created a major shift in everyone’s norm. Within\nthis workshop caregivers will develop a toolkit to aid in the\nreturn to in person instruction. Caregivers will explore tools\nand strategies for self-care and care of their children while\nplanning to transition. Caregivers will increase their awareness\nof everyday changes and potential challenges as your children\ntransition to in person instruction. During this presentation\, she will be answering questions about her personal experience and evidence-based research\, challenges she has faced and strategies for success she has learned along the way\, how to engage and celebrate minds of all kinds\, and so much more! \nAbout the Presenter: Dr. Temple Grandin is one of the most accomplished and well-known adults with autism in the world. She is a world-renowned autism advocate\, bestselling author\, and distinguished speaker on autism and animal behavior and is considered a philosophical leader of both the animal welfare and autism advocacy movements. Dr. Grandin earned a Bachelor’s degree in human psychology from Franklin Pierce College\, a Master’s degree in animal science from Arizona State University\, and a doctorate in animal science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University\, and she lives and farms in Fort Collins\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:ASCV Speaker Series: Disability as Possibility with Hari Srinivasan
DESCRIPTION:During this presentation\, Hari will share insights gathered through his personal experience of autism and discuss his research on the impact of labeling and expectations on life outcomes for students and youth with disabilities. He challenges professionals\, educators\, and providers to be game changers – adopting a growth mindset\, an emphatic discipline\, and an approach of ‘equity of access’ to support and guide students and youth with disabilities to create their own personal agency and long-term quality of life. Through that understanding and ability to see ‘disability as possibility’\, opportunities are born from those possibilities so students and youth can take detours\, challenge the sinkholes\, pave new roads\, and persevere. \nAbout the presenter: Hari Srinivasan is a minimally-speaking autistic student at UC Berkeley\, Psychology major\, Disability Studies minor\, Phi Beta Kappa and Haas Scholar. He is a student journalist for the Daily Californian\, student instructor for a class on autism\, research assistant at the UC Berkeley Lab and was the first nonspeaking president of the student body\, Autism: Spectrum At Cal. \nHari was recently selected to serve on the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee\, which advises federal policy and priorities. Hari is also a Board member and Whistleblower Compliance Oicer at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and on the Council of Autistic Advisors for the Autism Society of America. He also enjoys creative writing and poetry.

DESCRIPTION:CA Adult Programs Open House\nAttend the CA Adult Programs Open House July Event. Many adults with autism spectrum disorder and related needs want to move out of their parents’ home but don’t know where to begin. Their parents are equally anxious for them to be independent. CA’s transition program equips clients with the skills they need to eventually live independently with just a little bit of support.  \nWe coach\, support and encourage our clients\, which helps them begin the transition to independence. \nOur residential program offers transitional housing for adults with autism and related needs who are interested in developing the life skills necessary to live on their own. The length of stay varies with each resident\, their skill level and goals. The ultimate goal of this program is for participants to move into their own apartment with just a little bit of ongoing support. \nEvent Details:\nJoin us on Wednesday\, July 28 from 5:00-7:00pm at CA’s Adult Program Residence\, learn about the process and what we have to offer. DESCRIPTION:CRAAG – Charlottesville Regional Autism Action Group \nTarget population: School-age children and adults in transition from High\nSchool (under age 22)\nPrimary focus: Raise awareness and provide the necessary information and\ntools to plan for the future. \nChairperson will send Zoom link before the meeting \nCRAAG formed three Work Groups targeted to different populations of adults\nwith developmental disabilities and autism. Each group focuses on expanding\nhousing options\, supports and services for their population. We are still\nrecruiting additional members for each group\, and hope you will consider\njoining one. This is a great opportunity to meet and connect with other families\nwith similar needs. \nGoals for Each Work Group\nEach Work Group will be co-chaired by a CRAAG parent and a professional.\nThe Work Groups will meet monthly or as needed. DESCRIPTION:Six. That’s the average age of diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And that’s a shame. Because a reliable diagnosis can be made as early as age two. And when it comes to diagnosing ASD\, the sooner\, the better. Join us for ADOS-2 Training to learn more!  \nCA Human Services is thrilled to have Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP leading this new\, progressive approach to teaching clinical professionals to diagnose autism using the second edition of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2). We recognize that confidence and expertise come from practice and experience\, so in addition to a three-day virtual workshop\, this program includes a follow-up booster coaching session. Virtual sessions will be held on Zoom.  \nTraining starts on Wednesday\, July 21st at 8:30 am.  \nBecause referrals can cause lengthy delays\, being able to make the diagnosis yourself saves precious time. So\, we’ve designed this program for professionals on the front line— psychologists\, licensed professional counselors\, clinical social workers and speech pathologists— empowering you to intervene at the first suspicion of a developmental delay. \nUpon completion of the three-day ADOS-2 Training workshop\, participants will be able to:\n• Describe the essential features\, and the advantages and disadvantages\, of the ADOS-2 as a measure of social communication and behavior. \n• Identify the variables that need to be considered in determining which module of the ADOS to use: mental age\, chronological age\, expressive language abilities \n• Select the appropriate module to administer for a given child \n• Describe the purpose of\, and the focus of observation for\, each of the tasks within each of the four modules \n• Understand the administration the tasks within each of the four modules  \n• Discuss how to code the child’s language and communication\, reciprocal social interaction\, play\, stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests\, and other abnormal behaviors based on the child’s performance on tasks. \nBecause of the hands-on\, interactive nature of this workshop\, participation will be limited to 20 people.  \nYou’ll learn to:\n• Explain the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to your colleagues and clients. \n• Use the ADOS-2 to diagnose autism spectrum disorders in clients as young as age two. \n• Explain testing results to clients and caregivers and refer them to support services. \n• Seek and provide support and guidance within a network of fellow practitioners. \nThis Training Program has multiple components to provide plenty of practice and reinforcement: \n– Three-day Instructor-Led Virtual Workshop (July 21\, 22\, & 23 / 8:30a-4:30p EST) \n– Small Group Booster Session (October 1 / 1:00p-5:00p EST) \nAt 3 months: Dr. Minshawi and participants will watch an ADOS administration video conducted by a participant or from training video archives. Dr. Minshawi will lead an interactive discussion on coding and provide participants with feedback on their scoring of the protocol. Format of these sessions will be individualized based on organization and participants’ needs and training goals. \nNOTES: \n\nRegistration will close on Friday\, July 16th at 12:00PM EST.\nIn order for training to take place\, there must be at least 10 registrants. \nParticipants will be provided with the 5-module protocols for the training and a certificate of attendance.\nParticipants must have their own copy of the ADOS-2 manual and a working camera/microphone in order to participate in the training.\nThere will be a break to allow time for lunch on your own.\n\nAbout Our Instructor:\nNoha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified independent ADOS-2 trainer. She has been on the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine since 2007. Her clinical practice is focused on Applied Behavior Analysis and behavioral interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)\, as well as the assessment and diagnosis of ASD and other childhood disorders. Dr. Minshawi-Patterson provides parent training in individually-designed behavioral interventions\, as well as training for students and professionals on the behavioral assessment\, diagnosis and treatment of ASD.
