SUMMARY:ASCV Speaker Series: Disability as Possibility with Hari Srinivasan
DESCRIPTION:During this presentation\, Hari will share insights gathered through his personal experience of autism and discuss his research on the impact of labeling and expectations on life outcomes for students and youth with disabilities. He challenges professionals\, educators\, and providers to be game changers – adopting a growth mindset\, an emphatic discipline\, and an approach of ‘equity of access’ to support and guide students and youth with disabilities to create their own personal agency and long-term quality of life. Through that understanding and ability to see ‘disability as possibility’\, opportunities are born from those possibilities so students and youth can take detours\, challenge the sinkholes\, pave new roads\, and persevere. \nAbout the presenter: Hari Srinivasan is a minimally-speaking autistic student at UC Berkeley\, Psychology major\, Disability Studies minor\, Phi Beta Kappa and Haas Scholar. He is a student journalist for the Daily Californian\, student instructor for a class on autism\, research assistant at the UC Berkeley Lab and was the first nonspeaking president of the student body\, Autism: Spectrum At Cal. \nHari was recently selected to serve on the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee\, which advises federal policy and priorities. Hari is also a Board member and Whistleblower Compliance Oicer at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and on the Council of Autistic Advisors for the Autism Society of America. He also enjoys creative writing and poetry.

SUMMARY:Adult Programs Open House
DESCRIPTION:CA Adult Programs Open House\nAttend the CA Adult Programs Open House July Event. Many adults with autism spectrum disorder and related needs want to move out of their parents’ home but don’t know where to begin. Their parents are equally anxious for them to be independent. CA’s transition program equips clients with the skills they need to eventually live independently with just a little bit of support. \nWe coach\, support and encourage our clients\, which helps them begin the transition to independence. \nOur residential program offers transitional housing for adults with autism and related needs who are interested in developing the life skills necessary to live on their own. The length of stay varies with each resident\, their skill level and goals. The ultimate goal of this program is for participants to move into their own apartment with just a little bit of ongoing support. \nEvent Details:\nJoin us on Wednesday\, July 28 from 5:00-7:00pm at CA’s Adult Program Residence\, learn about the process and what we have to offer. Come for the whole two hours to socialize or just long enough to ask your questions and tour the house! CA staff and current residents will be on site to answer your questions. \nCA will be providing light refreshments. \nRegister to attend the CA Adult Programs Open House event here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/adult-programs-open-house-june-2021-registration-157676118515 \nLearn more about CA and our adults programs by visiting the CA website: https://www.commonwealthautism.org/for-individuals-families/#adult \nNot from Richmond\, Virginia? \nMake a day of your tour and check out all the things Richmond has to offer! The visit Richmond website offers a list of activities open during COVID. \nCA’s COVID Response:\nIn order to safely conduct the open-house\, CA will require guests to wear a mask while inside the residency. If you or someone in your party has been exhibiting symptoms of COVID\, we ask that you do not attend this open house and schedule a tour at a later date when symptoms are no longer present. \nAbout the Organizer:\nIn 1995\, a frustrated but visionary group of parents of children with autism started our organization to bridge the services gaps their families faced. We’re still passionate about serving people with Autism\, but our mission has expanded to include systems level work for all types of developmental disabilities. Since our humble beginnings around a kitchen table\, we’ve grown to an organization with a budget of $3.7 million. \nIt’s an exciting time at CA. We’re doing things differently. In order to amplify our impact we work in both the public and private sectors. And although we provide some direct services\, we concentrate on reimagining human services systems. We focus on: \n-Identifying gaps\, building awareness\, and creating a vision for improving systems. \n-Educating\, training and supporting our communities. \n-Modeling and replicating best practices and services in inclusive settings. \nThis systems change work often takes longer\, but it can be transformational\, and that’s why we’re here. Every day\, we work toward a future where the most vulnerable Virginians of all ages can participate in every aspect of our community and realize their full potential. www.commonwealthautism.org

SUMMARY:ADOS-2 Training
DESCRIPTION:Six. That’s the average age of diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And that’s a shame. Because a reliable diagnosis can be made as early as age two. And when it comes to diagnosing ASD\, the sooner\, the better. Join us for ADOS-2 Training to learn more! \nCA Human Services is thrilled to have Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP leading this new\, progressive approach to teaching clinical professionals to diagnose autism using the second edition of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2). We recognize that confidence and expertise come from practice and experience\, so in addition to a three-day virtual workshop\, this program includes a follow-up booster coaching session. Virtual sessions will be held on Zoom. \nTraining starts on Wednesday\, July 21st at 8:30 am. \nBecause referrals can cause lengthy delays\, being able to make the diagnosis yourself saves precious time. So\, we’ve designed this program for professionals on the front line— psychologists\, licensed professional counselors\, clinical social workers and speech pathologists— empowering you to intervene at the first suspicion of a developmental delay. \nUpon completion of the three-day ADOS-2 Training workshop\, participants will be able to:\n• Describe the essential features\, and the advantages and disadvantages\, of the ADOS-2 as a measure of social communication and behavior. \n• Identify the variables that need to be considered in determining which module of the ADOS to use: mental age\, chronological age\, expressive language abilities \n• Select the appropriate module to administer for a given child \n• Describe the purpose of\, and the focus of observation for\, each of the tasks within each of the four modules \n• Understand the administration the tasks within each of the four modules \n• Discuss how to code the child’s language and communication\, reciprocal social interaction\, play\, stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests\, and other abnormal behaviors based on the child’s performance on tasks. \nBecause of the hands-on\, interactive nature of this workshop\, participation will be limited to 20 people. \nYou’ll learn to:\n• Explain the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to your colleagues and clients. \n• Use the ADOS-2 to diagnose autism spectrum disorders in clients as young as age two. \n• Explain testing results to clients and caregivers and refer them to support services. \n• Seek and provide support and guidance within a network of fellow practitioners. \nThis Training Program has multiple components to provide plenty of practice and reinforcement: \n– Three-day Instructor-Led Virtual Workshop (July 21\, 22\, & 23 / 8:30a-4:30p EST) \n– Small Group Booster Session (October 1 / 1:00p-5:00p EST) \nAt 3 months: Dr. Minshawi and participants will watch an ADOS administration video conducted by a participant or from training video archives. Dr. Minshawi will lead an interactive discussion on coding and provide participants with feedback on their scoring of the protocol. SUMMARY:Briefing on New Supports for Families: Child Care Subsidy Expansion & Child Tax Credit
DESCRIPTION:During the 2021 Virginia General Assembly session\, legislation was passed that temporarily expands Virginia’s child care subsidy program to families earning up to 85% of the state median income and to those parents who are in the job search process. \nAnd new federal resources are available to families starting this month through the Child Tax Credit/Allowance\, triggering monthly payments for eligible families with children. \nBut these resources are effective only if families take steps to access them. Please join a virtual briefing to learn more about these resources and how you can help connect families to them! \nJoin us on Wednesday\, July 7 at 12:00 pm to hear from families\, front-line representatives\, and state leaders about these important new resources and learn how you can help more families access child care subsidies (before these critical expansions end – currently 7/31/21) and the child tax credit. \nPlease click here to register for the webinar. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. Note\, capacity is limited and only the first 500 attendees to join the session will be able to participate. The session will be recorded\, and we’ll make the recording available widely. \nPlease note that no CEUs or attendance certificates will be awarded to participants. We hope you find the information valuable.

SUMMARY:ADOS-2 Virtual Training - June 2021
DESCRIPTION:Please join CA and Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP for this training workshop on ADOS-2.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nSix. That’s the average age of diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And that’s a shame. Because a reliable diagnosis can be made as early as age two. And when it comes to diagnosing ASD\, the sooner\, the better. \nWe’re thrilled to have Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP leading this new\, progressive approach to teaching clinical professionals to diagnose autism using the second edition of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2). We recognize that confidence and expertise come from practice and experience\, so in addition to a three-day virtual workshop\, this program includes a follow-up booster coaching session. Virtual sessions will be held on Zoom. \nTraining starts on Wednesday\, March 10th at 8:30 am. \nThe Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured\, standardized assessment of communication\, social interaction\, and play or imaginative use of materials for individuals who have been referred because of possible autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This three-day course teaches participants how to administer the ADOS-2 as part of a comprehensive evaluation for determining a diagnosis of ASD. The course is designed for practitioners who are experienced in working with and assessing individuals with ASD using other diagnostic tools. Through a combination of didactic training and experiential work using the ADOS-2 with an individual child\, participants will gain confidence in the use of this tool. The goals of training include\, but are not limited to\, establishing an efficient administration of the ADOS-2 as part of a comprehensive psychological assessment. \nUpon completion of the two-day workshop\, participants will be able to:\n• Describe the essential features\, and the advantages and disadvantages\, of the ADOS-2 as a measure of social communication and behavior. \n• Identify the variables that need to be considered in determining which module of the ADOS to use: mental age\, chronological age\, expressive language abilities \n• Select the appropriate module to administer for a given child \n• Describe the purpose of\, and the focus of observation for\, each of the tasks within each of the four modules \n• Understand the administration the tasks within each of the four modules • Discuss how to code the child’s language and communication\, reciprocal social interaction\, play\, stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests\, and other abnormal behaviors based on the child’s performance on tasks \nBecause of the hands-on\, interactive nature of this workshop\, participation will be limited to 25 people. \n  \nThe ADOS-2 Training Program has multiple components to provide plenty of practice and reinforcement:\n– Three-day Instructor-Led Virtual Workshop (March 10\, 11 and 12/ 8:30a-4:30p EST) \n• Introduces participants to the ADOS-2 and ADOS-2 toddler modules. \n• Allows participants to observe the administration and scoring of the assessment. \n• Teaches clinical practitioners to recognize when and how to administer the assessment. \n• Provides practice scoring an assessment. \n– Small Group Booster Session (June 25 / 1:00p-5:00p EST) \nAt 3 months: Dr. Minshawi and participants will watch an ADOS administration video conducted by a participant or from training video archives. Dr. Minshawi will lead an interactive discussion on coding and provide participants with feedback on their scoring of the protocol. Format of these sessions will be individualized based on organization and participants’ needs and training goals. \n  \n***NOTES: \nRegistration will close on Friday\, March 5th at 12:00PM EST. \n***In order for training to take place\, there must be at least 20 registrants. \nParticipants will be provided with the 5 module protocols for the training and a certificate of attendance. \nParticipants must have their own copy of the ADOS-2 manual and a working camera/microphone in order to participate in the training. \nThere will be a break to allow time for lunch on your own. \nAbout Our Instructor: \nNoha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified independent ADOS-2 trainer. She has been on the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine since 2007. Her clinical practice is focused on Applied Behavior Analysis and behavioral interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)\, as well as the assessment and diagnosis of ASD and other childhood disorders. Dr. Minshawi-Patterson provides parent training in individually-designed behavioral interventions\, as well as training for students and professionals on the behavioral assessment\, diagnosis and treatment of ASD. \nAbout the Organizer: \nIn 1995\, a frustrated but visionary group of parents of children with autism started our organization to bridge the services gaps their families faced. We focus on: \n• Identifying gaps\, building awareness\, and creating a vision for improving systems. \n• Educating\, training and supporting our communities. \n• Modeling and replicating best practices and services in inclusive settings. \nThis systems change work often takes longer\, but it can be transformational\, and that’s why we’re here. Every day\, we work toward a future where the most vulnerable Virginians of all ages can participate in every aspect of our community and realize their full potential. \nNOTE: Materials Provided: \nAll participants need a copy of the ADOS-2 manual and copies of all 5 module protocols to refer to during the training.

SUMMARY:A Different Way of Thinking - Autism Advocacy Magic Show
DESCRIPTION:30-minute virtual magic show followed by a post-show Q&A.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nIn his 30 minute virtual magic show\, magician/autistic self-advocate Cody Clark combines magic\, comedy\, and storytelling to share what living with autism is like. Starting with his initial diagnosis and ending with his college graduation\, Cody places his magic routines inside common life experiences to show how his autism makes him different\, yet similar to most people. By the end of his show\, you’ll think quite differently about the art of magic and about autism! Students will benefit by seeing from example how Cody’s handled different life events similar to what they go through and by being able to ask him their questions about transitioning to adulthood during his post show Q&A
