SUMMARY:ADOS-2 Virtual Training - June 2021
DESCRIPTION:Please join CA and Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP for this training workshop on ADOS-2.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nSix. That’s the average age of diagnosis for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. And that’s a shame. Because a reliable diagnosis can be made as early as age two. And when it comes to diagnosing ASD\, the sooner\, the better. \nWe’re thrilled to have Noha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP leading this new\, progressive approach to teaching clinical professionals to diagnose autism using the second edition of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2). We recognize that confidence and expertise come from practice and experience\, so in addition to a three-day virtual workshop\, this program includes a follow-up booster coaching session. Virtual sessions will be held on Zoom. \nTraining starts on Wednesday\, March 10th at 8:30 am. \nBecause referrals can cause lengthy delays\, being able to make the diagnosis yourself saves precious time. So\, we’ve designed this program for professionals on the front line— psychologists\, licensed professional counselors\, clinical social workers and speech pathologists— empowering you to intervene at the first suspicion of a developmental delay. \nThe Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) is a semi-structured\, standardized assessment of communication\, social interaction\, and play or imaginative use of materials for individuals who have been referred because of possible autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This three-day course teaches participants how to administer the ADOS-2 as part of a comprehensive evaluation for determining a diagnosis of ASD. The course is designed for practitioners who are experienced in working with and assessing individuals with ASD using other diagnostic tools. Through a combination of didactic training and experiential work using the ADOS-2 with an individual child\, participants will gain confidence in the use of this tool. The goals of training include\, but are not limited to\, establishing an efficient administration of the ADOS-2 as part of a comprehensive psychological assessment. \nUpon completion of the two-day workshop\, participants will be able to:\n• Describe the essential features\, and the advantages and disadvantages\, of the ADOS-2 as a measure of social communication and behavior. \n• Identify the variables that need to be considered in determining which module of the ADOS to use: mental age\, chronological age\, expressive language abilities \n• Select the appropriate module to administer for a given child \n• Describe the purpose of\, and the focus of observation for\, each of the tasks within each of the four modules \n• Understand the administration the tasks within each of the four modules • Discuss how to code the child’s language and communication\, reciprocal social interaction\, play\, stereotyped behaviors and restricted interests\, and other abnormal behaviors based on the child’s performance on tasks \nBecause of the hands-on\, interactive nature of this workshop\, participation will be limited to 25 people. \nYou’ll learn to:\n• Explain the importance of early diagnosis and intervention to your colleagues and clients. \n• Use the ADOS-2 to diagnose autism spectrum disorders in clients as young as age two. \n• Explain testing results to clients and caregivers and refer them to support services. \n• Seek and provide support and guidance within a network of fellow practitioners. \n  \nThe ADOS-2 Training Program has multiple components to provide plenty of practice and reinforcement:\n– Three-day Instructor-Led Virtual Workshop (March 10\, 11 and 12/ 8:30a-4:30p EST) \n• Introduces participants to the ADOS-2 and ADOS-2 toddler modules. \n• Allows participants to observe the administration and scoring of the assessment. \n• Teaches clinical practitioners to recognize when and how to administer the assessment. \n• Provides practice scoring an assessment. \n– Small Group Booster Session (June 25 / 1:00p-5:00p EST) \nAt 3 months: Dr. Minshawi and participants will watch an ADOS administration video conducted by a participant or from training video archives. Dr. Minshawi will lead an interactive discussion on coding and provide participants with feedback on their scoring of the protocol. Format of these sessions will be individualized based on organization and participants’ needs and training goals. \n  \n***NOTES: \nRegistration will close on Friday\, March 5th at 12:00PM EST. \n***In order for training to take place\, there must be at least 20 registrants. \nParticipants will be provided with the 5 module protocols for the training and a certificate of attendance. \nParticipants must have their own copy of the ADOS-2 manual and a working camera/microphone in order to participate in the training. \nThere will be a break to allow time for lunch on your own. \nAbout Our Instructor: \nNoha Minshawi-Patterson\, Ph.D.\, HSPP is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified independent ADOS-2 trainer. She has been on the faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine since 2007. Her clinical practice is focused on Applied Behavior Analysis and behavioral interventions for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)\, as well as the assessment and diagnosis of ASD and other childhood disorders. Dr. Minshawi-Patterson provides parent training in individually-designed behavioral interventions\, as well as training for students and professionals on the behavioral assessment\, diagnosis and treatment of ASD. \nAbout the Organizer: \nIn 1995\, a frustrated but visionary group of parents of children with autism started our organization to bridge the services gaps their families faced. We’re still passionate about serving people with Autism\, but our mission has expanded to include systems level work for all types of developmental disabilities. Many adults with autism spectrum disorder and related needs want to move out of their parents’ home but don’t know where to begin. Their parents are equally anxious for them to be independent. CA’s transition program equips clients with the skills they need to eventually live independently with just a little bit of support.  \nWe coach\, support and encourage our clients\, which helps them begin the transition to independence. \nOur residential program offers transitional housing for adults with autism and related needs who are interested in developing the life skills necessary to live on their own. The length of stay varies with each resident\, their skill level and goals. DESCRIPTION:Previous studies have shown that older adults with autism traits may experience notably increased difficulty with executive function and social cognition as they age. Learn about remerging brain research on the role of the underlying neuroanatomy in seniors with ASD.\n\n\nGreg Wallace\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech\, Language\, and Hearing Sciences at The George Washington University. His research focuses on neuropsychological and structural brain development in autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental disorders across the lifespan and their impacts on real-world outcomes. He is also particularly interested in eating-related behaviors and their cognitive and neural correlates in typical and atypical (e.g.\, autism spectrum disorder) development. Dr. Wallace has published extensively and presented his work widely on these and related topics.

The quiz will be added to this page once the event has concluded.  \n\n\n\n  \nDr. Lawrence Fung is a scientist and psychiatrist specialized in autism spectrum disorder (ASD)\, and the father of a neurodiverse teenager with ASD. He is the director of the Stanford Neurodiversity Project\, which strives to uncover the strengths of neurodiverse individuals and utilize their talents to increase innovation and productivity of the society as a whole. He directs the Neurodiverse Student Support Program\, Neurodiversity at Work Program (recently funded by Autism Speaks)\, and Adult Neurodevelopment Clinic at Stanford. Dr. Fung is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. His lab advances the understanding of neural bases of human socio-communicative and cognitive functions by using novel neuroimaging and technologies. His team devise and implement novel interventions to improve the lives of neurodiverse individuals by maximizing their potential and productivity.

SUMMARY:TMS and ASD – 2021 Research Updates
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear Manuel Casanova\, MD\, describe recent research using transcranial magnetic stimulation as a potential therapy for a number of neurological and psychiatric conditions. \n  \nManuel Casanova\, MD\, completed his residency training in neurology and then spent 3 years doing a fellowship in neuropathology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. During his stay at the Johns Hopkins Hospital\, Dr. Casanova was in-charge of Pediatric Neuropathology. He spent several years as Deputy Medical Examiner for Washington\, D.C.\, where he gained valuable experience in the post-mortem examination of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and child abuse. His expertise in the field was recognized by honorary appointments as a Scientific Expert for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and as a Professorial Lecturer for the Department of Forensic Science at George Washington University. Dr. Casanova spent 8 years helping to establish 2 of the most successful brain banks in this country: The Johns Hopkins Brain Resource Center (3 years) and the Brain Bank Unit of the Clinical Brains Disorders Branch at the National Institutes of Mental Health (5 years).

Dr. Nicolaidis will review the research used to create and evaluate the toolkit and will demonstrate how adult patients\, their supporters\, and their providers can use the tools to facilitate high quality healthcare. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nChristina Nicolaidis\, MD\, MPH\, is a Professor at the School of Social Work at Portland State University and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University.  As a general internist and health services researcher\, Dr. Nicolaidis uses participatory research to improve the health and healthcare of marginalized populations. The majority of her current projects focus on autism in adulthood. She is the co-founder and co-director of the Academic Autism Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education (AASPIRE)\, an international academic-community partnership that uses community-based participatory research to address the priorities of autistic adults. AASPIRE has conducted a series of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded studies on health care and employment for autistic adults and has created the AASPIRE Healthcare Toolkit for use in primary care settings. She is currently leading a large NIMH-funded R01 project to develop and test a set of accessible\, patient-reported outcome measures for autistic adults. She also is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal\, Autism in Adulthood. More broadly\, Dr. Nicolaidis works to improve health equity and address social determinants of health. She has led or collaborated on multiple externally-funded projects on intimate partner violence\, racial health equity\, chronic pain\, substance use disorders\, and health system transformation. She directs the Social Determinants of Health Initiative\, which brings together individuals from Portland State University\, Oregon Health & Science University\, community organizations\, governmental agencies\, and local health systems to improve health equity. Dr. Nicolaidis teaches in the School of Social Work at Portland State University (PSU) and teaches and practices internal medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).

CAS is the co-chair of the Autism and Suicide committee of the American Association of Suicidology.  She has a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching in Special Education\, is a certified autism specialist\, and owner of Lisa Morgan Consulting LLC.  Lisa is the author of three books and two autism resources for crisis support in the autism community.  Lisa is a Community Council member of AASET (Autistic Adults and other Stakeholders Engaged Together). \nTeal W. Benevides\, PhD\, MS\, OTR/L is an occupational therapist\, researcher\, wife\, and mother. Currently\, she serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and in the Institute of Public and Preventive Health at Augusta University. Teal is committed to fostering access to services and supports for individuals on the autism spectrum. In this collaborative work with autistic partners\, Teal aims to identify ways for individuals to achieve better health outcomes and be able to participate in meaningful life activities. Teal co-leads the Autistic Adults and other Stakeholders Engage Together (AASET) project with Dr. Stephen Shore and a talented Community Council.

Autistic people often have multiple physical and mental health concerns\, frequently see specialists\, and use multiple medications. Unfortunately\, the current healthcare system often fails to adequately address the needs of people on the spectrum. As a result\, there is more frequent need for emergency health care and hospitalization and frequent unmet needs. We must understand health and healthcare needs across the life course so that recommendations can be made about how to improve health and health care at critical points in a person’s life. \nThis webinar presents findings from the recent National Autism Indicators Report: Health and Health Care. This report\, the sixth in the National Autism Indicators Report Series produced from the Life Course Outcomes Research Program area at the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute\, reports indicators of health and health care for autistic people across the lifespan. Topics covered include overall health\, health services\, medication\, insurance\, and accessing services. The report combines data from two national surveys about health\, one national sample of hospital inpatient stays\, and previously published findings from Kaiser Permanente Northern California patient records. \nFindings highlight that autistic people have many healthcare needs that are not adequately addressed and needs for non-physical health concerns such as mental health and specialty care are more often unmet. The report also highlights the racial and ethnic disparities that persist in health and health care in the US. Specific concern arises around health care transition\, with low access to health care transition for youth and limited availability of adult health care providers with autism knowledge.  The purpose of this report is to catalogue indicators to aid in decision making that improves the quality of care and quality of life of autistic persons. \n  \nAbout the Presenter \nJessica Rast is a researcher at the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute of Drexel University. She works in the Life Course Outcomes research program area examining questions about the lives\, experiences\, and services of autistic people. In her role\, she catalogues and analyzes existing national data sources to present a national picture of experiences across life domains and the life span. Much of her work focuses on the transition period from adolescence to adulthood. She is particularly interested in health\, health care\, and models of health service provision\, including examining ways primary care can facilitate mental health care in autistic children and adults.

For the 4th year in a row\, the community is invited to participate in the Town of Occoquan Community Peep Contest by designing\, creating\, and submitting family-friendly Peep dioramas.\nEnter by March 25 to win in one of four categories: Individual; Family/Team; Youth (ages 12-16); and Kids (12 and under).\nSign up through this Google form: https://docs.google.com/…/1LFscjScPDWpNUT6uwN9kGad…/edit.\nParticipate virtually by uploading photos of your project.
