ASCV Workshop: “Extraordinary People” Screening and Panel Discussion (Richmond)

September 18, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

Join us on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 as we kick off our Fall workshop series with a special screening of Extraordinary People, a short film about autism, community and meaningful work. Following the film, we’ll host a panel discussion about employment and vocational programs in our local community. The evening’s goal is to highlight local programs that are similar to those featured in the film – around the themes of strengths of individuals with autism, the importance of individually-focused work and volunteer programs, and the impact feeling fulfilled and successful has on individuals.

Panelists will include:

  • April Lynch, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor at VCU’s RRTC, and Sam Hulcher, a young man with autism who works at VCU’s Cary Street gym
  • Representatives from Frank Community Farm
  • Representatives from The Next Move Program

***Please note: The September workshop will be held on the UMFS campus (3900 W. Broad Street) in the Charterhouse School auditorium. When you pull in the front entrance to the UMFS campus off Broad Street, the school building is the brick building with the green roof on your left before you get to the traffic circle.

Free Childcare for Ages 3-17 Available for ASCV Members Only (6:45-9pm)

Please read our childcare guidelines BEFORE registering your child for childcare:

Guidelines for Childcare

1) Only children who have a reservation can be accepted into childcare. For the safety of all children, it is important that we keep an appropriate ratio of children to childcare workers. If you have not pre-registered for childcare, please do not ask the childcare workers to watch your child. Reservations are made through Eventbrite, and all registrants will receive a confirmation email that they are registered for childcare. Registering for a workshop/presentation is not the same thing as registering for childcare.

2) Parents/Guardians must sign children in and out of childcare.

3) Parents/Guardians must fill out and sign a Liability Release form for the Autism Society Central Virginia to keep on file.

4) Prior to the childcare event, Parents/Guardians will be sent a child information form to fill out on each child that is registered for childcare. The Autism Society Central Virginia will keep this info on file. The information that is collected shall remain “Confidential” and will only be used by selected ASCV personnel for providing appropriate care to your child.

5) Due to allergies, food and drink are not permitted in the childcare area.

6) For health and liability reasons, childcare workers will not take children to the toilet or diaper children. Parents will be asked to come and offer assistance with their child’s toileting needs.

7) Please be aware that our childcare area is staffed by volunteers. Should a child become upset or distressed, our sitters will try to calm and comfort him/her. If the distress continues, or if childcare workers are concerned a child may harm himself/herself or others, parents will be texted and asked to come to the childcare area to offer assistance.

8) Please pick up your child promptly at the end of the meeting/event.
